A Western Red Cedar bough is a fragrant, long-lasting evergreen branch from the Thuja plicata tree, characterized by flat, dark green sprays of scale-like needles and a pleasant, aromatic scent when crushed. These boughs have a distinctive appearance, often described as having dark green or yellowish-green foliage, and they are frequently used for seasonal and holiday decorations like wreaths and garlands.

Appearance and characteristics

  • Foliage: Flat, scale-like needles arranged in dark green sprays. The underside of the needles is a lighter green due to white stomatal bands. Some varieties may have a yellowish-green tint.
  • Aroma: A strong, pleasant, and distinctive cedar fragrance when crushed.
  • Structure: Flexible branching that is easy to work with for decorations.
