The Ukrainian Purple (or Purple Russian) is a highly productive, indeterminate heirloom tomato plant, known for producing 3–4 inch long, 6 oz, plum-shaped fruits with deep purple-maroon skin and rich, sweet, meaty flesh. Ideal for pastes, sauces, and salads, these crack-resistant, 5-6 foot tall vines thrive in various conditions, ripening around 75-80 days.
Key Characteristics & Growing Tips:
Fruit Appearance: Dark purple/black, sometimes with green shoulders, elongated, plum/Roma-shaped.
Flavor & Texture: Sweet, tangy, meaty, with few seeds, often described as having a rich, smoky flavor.
Plant Habit: Indeterminate (needs staking/caging), reaching 5-6 feet high.
Yield & Season: High producer, suitable for cooler temperatures, maturing in 75-85 days.
Usage: Excellent for fresh eating, salsa, roasting, and, due to its low-moisture, dense flesh, superb for tomato sauce and paste.
Origin: An heirloom variety brought from Ukraine by Irma Henkel.
This variety is highly regarded for its ability to produce consistent, high-quality fruit, even under challenging conditions.
