Swiss chard (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris) is a highly nutritious, leafy green biennial (often grown as an annual) recognized by its large, crinkled, deep-green or bronze leaves and thick, edible, brightly colored stalks (white, red, yellow, or orange). It forms a 1.5 to 2-foot tall rosette, thriving in both cool and hot weather.
