Zucchini - Black Beauty
Zucchini - Black Beauty
Black Beauty is a popular, high-yielding, heirloom summer squash (introduced in the 1920s) featuring compact, 2–3 ft bush-type plants. It produces straight, glossy, dark green-to-black fruits with tender, creamy white flesh, best harvested at 6–8 inches. This fast-growing variety thrives in full sun, maturing in 50–60 days.
Key Characteristics and Growth Details:
Plant Habit: Compact, upright, and bushy, making it ideal for small gardens, raised beds, and container gardening.
Fruit Description: Slender, cylindrical, and slightly ridged fruits, with skin so dark it appears black, turning greenish-black at full maturity.
Harvesting: Best picked when 6–8 inches long while tender. If left too long, they can become quite large, but remain good for cooking.
Yield: Highly productive; frequent harvesting encourages continuous, prolific production throughout the season.
Flavor & Texture: Tender, firm, and creamy white flesh with a mild, delicate, and slightly sweet flavor.
Growing Conditions: Thrives in full sun and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil.
Uses: Extremely versatile for cooking, including grilling, baking, sautéing, and, when young, raw in salads.
History: An All-America Selections winner in 1957.
