Royal Burgundy is an heirloom bush bean (approx. 15–20 inches tall) known for its striking, deep purple, stringless pods and high yield. The 5–6 inch pods are easy to spot against green foliage and turn deep green when cooked. It thrives in cool soil, is disease/beetle resistant, and matures in 50-60 days.
Key Characteristics and Growing Information:
Appearance: Plants have dark green foliage, sometimes with purple-tinted stems, and produce purple flowers. Pods are round, stringless, and purple on the outside with a green interior.
Taste/Texture: Tender, crunchy, and mild, with a slightly nutty flavor.
Usage: Excellent for fresh eating in salads, steaming, or canning.
Growth Habit: Compact, 15–20 inch bush that does not require trellising.
Cultivation:
Soil: Prefers well-drained, rich soil, with a pH of 6.0–6.8.
Light: Full sun.
Harvesting: 50–60 days to maturity. Daily harvesting increases yield.
Benefits: Resistant to white mold, bean common mosaic virus, and bean beetles.
These beans are popular for their vibrant color in the garden and their ability to produce well even in cooler northern climates
