Eggplant - Black Beauty
Eggplant - Black Beauty
Eggplant (Solanum melongena) is a tender, warm-season perennial (often grown as an annual) in the nightshade family, featuring bushy, 2–4 ft tall plants with large, lobed green leaves and purplish stems. It produces star-shaped, drooping violet flowers and glossy, edible, sponge-textured berries of deep purple.
Key Characteristics:
Plant Structure: Robust, branching plants that can grow up to 6 ft tall but are often kept to 2-4 ft. Leaves are large, coarse, and sometimes purple-tinged.
Flowers: Small, drooping, star-shaped flowers that are violet or purple.
Growth Requirements: Requires full sun, warm temperatures (70-85), and fertile, well-drained soil.
Harvest: Takes 50–80 days after flowering to reach maturity.
Varieties: American (dark purple, oblong), Japanese (slender, long), Italian (wide, short), and white varieties.
The plant thrives in hot weather and is a close relative of tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers. Some varieties may have minor spines on the stem or calyx.
