Coneflowers (Echinacea) are tough, daisy-like perennial flowers native to North America that thrive in full sun and attract heavy numbers of pollinators.
Growing Conditions
Light: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained, average soil. They tolerate poor, rocky, or clay soils, but hate sitting in soggy earth.
Water: Low-water needs once established; highly drought-tolerant.
Size: Grows 2 to 4 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide.
Care and Maintenance
Fertilizing: Skip the heavy fertilizer. Too much food causes weak stems and fewer blooms.
Pruning: Cut back dead winter growth in early spring. Snip off faded summer flowers (deadheading) to keep new blossoms coming.
Wildlife: Leave the spiny seed heads standing in late autumn. Goldfinches and other songbirds adore the seeds.
