Black Seeded Simpson
Black Seeded Simpson
Black Seeded Simpson lettuce is a popular, fast-growing heirloom leaf lettuce (introduced around 1850) known for producing large, upright, and compact bunches of tender, sweet, and light green ruffled leaves. It is highly prized by gardeners for being exceptionally early, productive, and, despite its tender texture, quite heat-tolerant and slow to bolt compared to other varieties.
Key Characteristics:
Leaf Type: Loose-leaf, ruffled/curled, light green to pale green.
Flavor/Texture: Delicate, sweet, crisp, and tender.
Growth Habit: Fast-growing (45-50 days), large, upright, and non-heading.
Performance: Highly adaptable, slow to bolt, heat/drought tolerant, and frost hardy.
Usage: Excellent for early spring, summer, or fall harvests; perfect for raw salads or sandwiches.
Cultivation Tips:
Planting: Direct sow in early spring or late summer, covering seeds with 1/4 inch of soil.
Spacing: Thin plants to 4–6 inches apart for smaller leaves, or 8-12 inches for full-sized, large heads.
Soil/Sun: Prefers cool, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.2-6.8, but tolerates a range of conditions.
Harvesting: Cut leaves continuously from the outside, or harvest the entire head at once.
As a staple in home gardens, this heirloom variety is often chosen for its reliability and ability to withstand warmer weather better than other lettuce types, allowing for a longer harvesting window.
